History of Alberton
Alberton’s first town hall and factory was built in 1918. This town hall was mainly used so residents could watch movies. The first company in Alberton was CJ Fuchs (Pty) Limited and is still doing business today. Alberton’s first streetlights were installed in 1924 – the same year a huge rat plague hit this town.
In 1926 Alberton got its first tarred roads and in 1943 Alberton’s first industrial suburb – Alrode - was established. The sought-after suburbs of Alberante and General Albertspark were established in the 1960’s.
In the 1960’s the census showed that there were about 9000 people living in Alberton. Today 205 000 people call this town home. |
